Gaoan - An undercover racket involving the sale of dead and diseased pigs by local farmers to slaughterhouses in several provinces in China has come to light. The investigation has also revealed the practice has been going on for a number of years.
A local pig farmer in eastern China's Jiangxi Province who wished to remain anonymous, spoke with China's Central Television, saying the sale of sick or dead pigs to local slaughterhouses has been going on for a number of years. The farmer said the "open secret" was known to many in the industry.
Authorities in Jiangxi Province say the illegal slaughterhouses suspected of selling the tainted pork in the cities of Gaoan and Fengcheng have been closed down and those who were in charge have been taken into custody. As many as seven provinces may be involved. The Ministry of Agriculture has also sent an inspection team to the province.
A pig farmer by the name of Yang told CCTV that his farm sold pork from diseased pigs in seven provinces, making 20 million yuan ($3.21 million) annually. In the CCTV report, it was said that the regular purchase price of pigs is about 14 Yuan per kilogram.
One vendor bought two diseased pigs for 6 Yuan per kilogram and sold them to a pork processing plant for 7 Yuan per kilogram. One worker from a local slaughterhouse told investigators that around 200 diseased pigs are slaughtered each day, and amounts to more than 70,000 pigs a year. It was also revealed that some of the dead pigs were infected with the highly infectious foot-and-mouth disease.
Gaoan city is one of the biggest pork producers in China, with over 2.0 million pigs and 1.1 million other kinds of livestock slaughtered annually. With a swine mortality rate of 3.0 percent, about 90,000 pigs die of disease every year in the province of Jiangxi. There are strict health laws and guidelines for the disposal of infected pigs.
