article imageChild given bagged crystal meth for Halloween candy

By Nancy Houser     Nov 5, 2014 in Crime
Hercules - An eight-year-old child who lives in Hercules, California, was given .10 gram of bagged methamphetamine, or crystal meth, as Halloween candy while trick-or-treating last Friday night.
A tenth of a gram of meth is enough for felony charges to be filed for possession of a controlled substance. Police are telling Hercules parents to check their children's candy from Halloween night as it could contain crystal meth in it. Meanwhile, the police are searching for the individual who gave the young girl the free bag of meth, intentionally or accidentally.
According to the SFGate, "The girl's father called police about 8:30 a.m. Monday after finding the small plastic baggie filled with a white powdery mixture in 8-year-old's sugar-heavy haul from Friday night," Sgt. Ezra Tafesse said.
"Police say it's difficult to fingerprint evidence this small after so many people have handled it. That's why they're not actively pursuing the perpetrator. At most, they want parents to check their child's candy carefully," reported abc7news.
Another child in a similar situation, reports KSN.com, a 4-year-old boy from Cincinnati, Ohio, whose mother found four boxes of bullets in her son's Halloween candy box from his preschool. The preschool has made no comment at this time regarding the bullets.
How long does meth last in the system?
Drugs are detected in the human body differently, depending on the body area. The body will feel meth effects in 15 to 20 minutes, but it can be detected in human saliva up to 72 hours. In urine, it can last up to five days. A urine meth test is 99% effective, so testing possible suspects is possible. Meanwhile, meth stays in human hair for 90 days or longer, according to lab tests.
The body does not need to be a victim of chronic meth usage, as a one-time usage will pick up the meth in the system. "The drug [meth] works directly on the brain and spinal cord by interfering with normal neurotransmission."
With one gram of meth equalling "110" usage hits for the body, current prices are $25 per 1/4 gram, $100 per gram, and $1700 per ounce, depending on the area where it is sold. In New York in 1999 one gram cost $240, while in 2005, it had dropped to $100. In the Bay Area of California in 2000, one gram cost $80. The highest usage is with 18-24 year old whites (males and females), with women more likely to use meth than cocaine.
Individuals who are on meth are more likely to also use alcohol, marijuana and cocaine rather than users of drugs like heroin ... seriously looking for that "high." Unfortunately, 85% of crimes of property are done by meth users, to sell and purchase more meth.
