Charlie Hebdo sales expected to soar from 60,000 to 3 million

Increased demand for Paris magazine

A spokesman for the magazine’s distributor said they normally print 60,000 copies but sell only 30,000 of them. But all over France and in many other countries, Charlie Hebdo is getting attention and sympathy and many want to show support by purchasing it. Further, some now see it as in the forefront of standing up for freedom of expression.

As a result of all this the demand for the magazine is rising and new orders are coming in each hour; the distributor believes they could sell upwards of 3,000,000 copies of this new issue.

The magazine was loaned office space and given help from other media publications so it could release its new issue. Charlie Hebdo officials said their front page will show their intention of not backing down from printing satire on religious themes and show that they will continue to target all religions.

Its front page on the new issue will feature a depiction of the Prophet Mohammed with one tear dropping from his eye. The captain is the popular “Je suis Charlie” (I am Charlie) and below the headline “Tout est Pardonne” (All is forgiven).

Demonstrations for Charlie Hebdo

There have been demonstrations all over the world to show support for the magazine, with huge numbers at many. Those numbers included more than 1.5 million in Paris and Reuters put the number of marchers in the country at 3.7 million.

The Paris march was the largest demonstration in the history of France. It featured 40 world leaders who linked arms and lead the crowd, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The attack on Charlie Hebdo on Wednesday, Jan. 7 led to three days of violence that saw 20 die, including eight Charlie Hebdo staff — editor Stéphane Charbonnier among them — two others in the magazine’s offices, three police officers (one who was in the Charlie Hebdo offices when the attack came), four hostages at a Jewish market and the three terrorists.

The magazine said it normally sells 4,000 copies internationally but for this issue they have already had 300,000 requests for copies.

Should they sell 3 million copies, given that they normally sell 30,000 copies of the 60,000 printed, it would take 100 editions of the magazine under the old sales figures to match what this one copy will have sold.
