Canadian soldier charged with 10 sexual offences

By Arthur Weinreb     Apr 5, 2014 in Crime
Petawawa - A 31-year-old infantryman stationed at CFB Petawawa is in custody facing charges. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) believe there may be more victims.
The investigation into Cpl. Derrick Gallagher, 31, began on March 29 when a woman came forward to the police. Two days later, Gallagher was initially charged with two counts of sexual assault. When he appeared in court in Pembroke, Ontario yesterday, he was charged with an additional six counts of sexual assault and two counts of voyeurism.
The offence of voyeurism is the observing or the making of a recording by mechanical or electronic means of a person without their consent and under circumstances where they have a reasonable expectation of privacy.
All police will say about the charges is that the offences allegedly occurred between January 2007 and March 2014 and that the charges involve multiple victims. They are alleged to have occurred in Pembroke, Ontario and in Petawawa where Gallagher lives. Petawawa and Pembroke are just east of Ottawa.
Although police do not have any evidence to date, they believe drugs may have been administered to the women before the assaults occurred.
Gallagher is an infantryman, and a member of the 1st Battalion Royal Canadian Regiment stationed at CFB Petawawa. He joined the Canadian Forces in December 2005 and served one tour of duty in Afghanistan between September 2008 and April 2009.
The OPP have taken the rare step of releasing a picture of the accused to the public. They also released two pictures of unusual tattoos Gallagher has on his arms. Police believe there may be more victims and Sgt. Kristine Rae told Radio-Canada police do not know how many victims there are and are investigating whether drugs were used.

Police in Saint John, New Brunswick where Gallagher grew up and went to high school are using the Violent Crime Linkage System database to see if any links can be found between the soldier and unsolved crimes.
The OPP is requesting any woman who has had contact with Gallagher or anyone that has any information to contact them.
Gallagher was remanded in custody yesterday and is scheduled to make a video appearance in a Pembroke, Ontario courtroom on Thursday.
