Brett Ryan charged with three crossbow murders in Scarborough

Thirty-five-year-old Brett Ryan, believed to be one of 4 brothers, was found on scene when police arrived yesterday afternoon at about 1 p.m. at Lawndale Road and Knowlton Drive in Scarborough, outside Toronto. Ryan was taken into custody at that time and has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder.

Ryan, whose had previous convictions for bank robbery and other offences, appeared briefly in court this morning. The three people killed have been identified as Susan, Alexander and Christoper Ryan.

Yesterday, one neighbor, Jerome Cruz, told media that while in his yard gardening he heard a commotion in the yard of the home next door. He heard one voice say “calm down” then not long afterwards heard screaming. It lasted for about five minutes and then it was quiet, Cruz said.

Soon after police cars began arriving.

Detective Sergeant Mike Carbone said that a 911 call came in from the house in question and they were lead to believe a stabbing had taken place. When they arrived on scene they found two men and a woman lying in the driveway. Medical assistance was provided but all three were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have now confirmed that they were shot with a crossbow. It appears that a wounded and bleeding man was able to go to a neighbor’s for help but it is unclear who that person was.

These killings, police said, are linked to an incident in the downtown waterfront area of Toronto. A condo in the Queen’s Quay was cordoned off after police found what they described as a suspicious package. A chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear (CBRN) team attended the team.

Police later said there was no danger to the general public. They have not said how the two cases are linked. The house had been owned by William and Susan Ryan; William died two years ago but it is believed that Susan Ryan still lived in the home.
