article imageAspiring jewelry store robbers fail miserably, lucky to be alive

By Greta McClain     Jul 4, 2014 in Crime
Fresno - In what looked more like a comedy scene from the Keystone Cops, a pair of would be armed robbers bit off more than they could chew, and the entire incident was caught on tape.
The two would be robbers walked into a jewelry store in Fresno, CA last Friday posing as customers. As they were speaking with a store clerk, one of the men pulls a gun. Things quickly went downhill from there for the robbers.
As one man holds the gun, the other attempts to jump over the counter, failing miserably. Employees of the store began yelling that they were being robbed, alerting the store's owner, Soledad Castaneda, who was in the office in the back of the store.
It was when Castaneda exited the office that the pair of robbers learned just how foolish their attempt was.
Although it cannot be seen on the video, Castaneda was holding a shotgun as he exited his office. The look of shock and fear is fairly evident, with the cellphone wielding robber immediately running to the door according to The Blaze.
Castaneda's brother, Jose Llamas, told ABC30:
"I got a phone call immediately after, so my first reaction was upset. Then I see this, I got upset, but it's funny. It wasn't very... planned out very well. I think they were very lucky. I would have been shooting them out the door."
Police have identified the robbery team. One of the suspects, a 17-year-old, has been arrested, and was identified as the suspect talking on the cellphone. The second suspect, identified as 16-year-old Edgar Yepez, is still at large and is considered armed and dangerous. Fresno police Chief Jerry Dyer told The Fresno Bee that both suspects have Modesto gang ties.
