Anti-corruption blogger decapitated in Brazil

Evany José Metzker, 67, was found with his hands tied behind his back and his body showing signs of torture. Some reports are circulating that Metzker was also scalped. Authorities believe that his murder was linked to his recent investigations into drug trafficking and child prostitution.

Metzker maintained a popular blog called ‘Coruja do Vale’, which translates to “The Owl of the Valley.” The blog was well-known for investigating and reporting allegations of abuse and corruption.

Authorities were able to quickly identify his body because his check book, credit cards, and ID were found nearby.

The Brazilian government is sending a team of investigators to the region to investigate his murder. It’s questionable, however, whether the government will be able to objectively investigate the incident given Metzker’s efforts to uncover government-linked corruption.

One local officer was quoted stating that the murder could have been “a crime of passion.” Owing to the execution style of the killing, and Metzker’s work, this seems like a tenuous theory.

Padre Paraiso, the city which Metzker’s body was found, is situated in the northeastern section of the state of Minas Gerais, which is located in the southern Brazil. The state is known for rampant poverty and is one of Brazil’s most underdeveloped regions.

Journalists are reportedly afraid of working in the region due to lack law enforcement, the presence of violent criminal groups, and alleged corruption.

Brazil barely manages to crack the top 100 of Reporters Without Borders 2015 Word Press Freedom Index, coming in at number 99 out of 100.
