Angry mom threatens to ‘blow up school’ when child fails test

Karen Shearon seems to have lost her cool when she was called by a guidance counselor who said her daughter had failed the New York Regent’s Exam. What Shearon said next shocked both teachers and school officials. Yes, Shearon was upset and undoubtedly angry, but she lost it and said, “I am going to blow up the school,” according to the criminal complaint.

Bomb threats are taken very seriously, and Susan Wagner High School officials immediately called the NYPD, telling them the incident occurred at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning. There was an immediate investigation. A school official said, “Safety and security of students and school staff are always [a] top priority.” Shearon was arrested on Thursday morning.

Shearon, 48, appeared in Stapleton Criminal Court on Friday dressed in a black fur coat and high-heeled black boots. The New Springville mom admitted to receiving the phone call from the school guidance counselor, as stated in the complaint. She was charged with misdemeanor aggravated harassment in the second degree, and released on a $1,000 bond. Her trial date has been set for March 30.

Mrs. Shearon talked with reporters from Staten Island Live after her arraignment and told them, “I never made such a phone call. If I was so dangerous and I said such a threat like that, wouldn’t you evacuate the school?” She also said she didn’t understand why school officials came to her house after she allegedly made the bomb threat.

“They harassed my children and that’s not correct,” she said. “And they waited 12 hours because it happened at 8:54 [in the morning], but they came at eight o’clock at night.” She is also upset because a representative from the school supposedly called her at work “numerous times” during the day of the alleged incident. She suggested to reporters she might take legal action against the school.

Shearon has three children, ages seven, 15 and 17-years of age. The two older children attend Susan Wagner High School.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend Karen Graham, who served as Editor-at-Large at Digital Journal. She was 78 years old. Karen's view of what is happening in our world was colored by her love of history and how the past influences events taking place today. Her belief in humankind's part in the care of the planet and our environment has led her to focus on the need for action in dealing with climate change. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
