A North Alabama police officer faces termination over the disturbing case of assault on 57-year-old Suresh Bhai Patel for failing to communicate in English.
The incident was captured in a video that shows Officer Eric Parker getting down from his patrol car along with a colleague and questioning Patel. Patel did not know English and responded by saying “no English.”
The video clearly shows the policeman forcing Patel on the ground that reportedly led to a fatal 'fused vertebrae' injury. Later the officers try to lift him on his feet but Patel is unable to get up and the two officers help him back to the ground.
Since Patel was unable to move, he was brought to a nearby hospital and doctors managed to partially restore his mobility after a cervical fusion surgery last Saturday, RT News reported.
Patel went to the US to help take care of his grandson. He was reportedly strolling outside his own son’s home in an affluent area in northern Alabama.
The officers reportedly defended their action saying they forced him on the ground when they attempted to search Patel and he allegedly put his hands in his pockets.
Parker accused of badly injuring Patel has been arrested and the FBI has opened an investigation. The FBI is also conducting additional inquiry to ascertain whether there were any federal violations.
India strongly condemned the brutal assault of its citizen in the US soil.
Meanwhile Patel has filed a federal lawsuit claiming his civil rights were violated.
“Madison Police Chief Larry Muncey announced Parker will be fired hours after Sureshbhai Patel filed a federal lawsuit. The lawsuit says Patel suffered injuries including partial paralysis,” Fox News reported.
Media reports mentioned that US lawmakers condemned the incident describing the episode as “disturbing.”
Firstpost quoted US Congressman Ami Bera saying, “Moving forward, we must come together as a nation to tackle the very real issues our minority communities face, and to rebuild trust and understanding among law enforcement agencies and the diverse communities that they serve."
