Victorville - Luckily the abduction of a 4-year-old girl from a California store did not last long. The man lost his grip on the girl and she was quickly rescued by her mother. Others chased the man and held him until police arrived.
A mother, who has not been identified, went into the Macias Cellular & Computers store in Victorville, California last Friday, accompanied by her baby and her four-year-old daughter.
Security footage from the store shows the mom in line at the counter, holding her baby. The four-year-old girl remained near the front door where candy machines are located. The video shows the door to the business open and a man reach in. He grabs the girl by the arm and quickly yanks her out of the store before running away.
The mother screams and runs out of the store in pursuit, still carrying her baby. She is followed by another customer who was also waiting in line.
According to authorities, the little girl struggled in an attempt to get away, causing the man to lose his grip on her. The mother grabbed her and brought her back into the store. Bystanders who heard the screaming mom followed the man and were able to subdue and hold him until deputies arrived.
The Sheriff's Office later identified the man as Terry Ransom, 24. ABC News reports Ransom was taken to a hospital for observation and then was booked into jail. He was charged with kidnapping and child cruelty.
The Victorville Daily Press reports Ransom has a lengthy criminal record. Court records show he has had robbery charges filed against him as well as ones for obstructing police and battery on a police officer. He was released in February after serving 162 days in the county jail for breaching probation.
Ransom's bail has been set at $250,000.
Stella Moriel, who owns the store with her husband Miguel, told the NBC affiliate in Los Angeles that when she first heard the mother scream, she thought it was a domestic dispute. Miguel Moriel was one of the people who took off chasing the suspect. Stella Moriel said when the mother returned to the store with her two kids, she was hysterical. Both children were crying and the little girl was clinging to her mother.
The four-year-old girl was scared but otherwise unharmed.
