Surveillance video shows man bypassing security, getting on plane

Although the incident happened a year ago, surveillance video from the Dallas/Fort Worth (D/FW) International Airport has just been released. The footage shows how easy it was for the 25-year-old man who had no luggage, no ID, and no ticket, to simply board an aircraft without going through TSA security.

The girlfriend of Damarias Cockerham, of Garland, Texas told him she was leaving him and flying to Guatemala City. According to the report of the D/FW airport police, on July 26, 2015 Cockerham went to the airport and simply walked through an unattended TSA checkpoint at the airport’s Terminal D. He then managed to get on the plane, presumably to talk the woman out of leaving him.

The video shows Cockerham, with no baggage, walking through the airport in an area where everyone else seems to have luggage. He is then shown walking through an unmanned security lane. WTPS reports the empty lane had a security belt blocking it but Cockerham simply moved it aside and walked through. A nearby TSA agent manning the next lane appears to be looking down at something, possibly at his phone, and pays no attention. Cockerham then just blended in with other passengers who were boarding the American Airlines plane.

After walking through the empty security lane, the video shows Cockerham going outside where he later boarded the plane. He is then seen returning to the terminal, escorted by an airport employee who was identified as a gate agent.

While the two of them were walking through the terminal, they are approached by two police officers. When one of the officers grabs Cockerham’s arm he breaks away, appearing highly agitated. He was later charged with criminal trespass.

It was also reported Cockerham refused to leave the plane until he was told the aircraft wasn’t going anywhere until after he left.

The report says the 25-year-old was crying and uncooperative. When he asked how he managed to get on the plane without a ticket and without going through security he said, “I walked.” He told police, “he didn’t want his girlfriend going down there and being with the wrong guy.”

Police found Cockerham’s car parked just outside Terminal D. Although a K9 detected something in the vehicle, no explosives or other dangerous materials were found. Both the TSA and police were satisfied Cockerham was upset about his girlfriend leaving and that was the only reason he avoided security and boarded the aircraft.

Since the incident happened, barriers have been erected in front of all empty security lanes at the D/FW airport.
