article imagePhoto Essay: Osijek through the lens of Romulic and Stojcic

By Paul Bradbury     Dec 15, 2014 in Travel
Osijek - The north-eastern Croatian region of Slavonia is not known for its mass tourism, but there is plenty to discover, as the lens of a celebrated Croatian photographer shows.
Tourism in Croatia is diversifying, and as Digital Journal discovered on a walking tour of the Slavonian city of Osijek on December 13, 2014 with celebrated photographer Mario Romulic, there is plenty of interest for tourists away from the Adriatic coast, which accounts for most of the country's tourism interest.
Romulic, together with partner Drazen Stojcic, is one of Croatia's leading photographers, whose work in promoting the country regularly receives national acclaim, and a recent Digital Journal feature on his photographs of the neighbouring region of Baranja highlighted a very different Croatia to the one tourists see on the Adriatic coast.
Romulic and Stojcic are natives of the north-eastern city of Osijek, a city with a rich heritage and proud tradition. Here is the city which introduced the first trams to South-East Europe, has the oldest brewery in Croatia and is home to the second largest church in the region.
While Osijek may be far from the beach, its emerging tourism industry is based on water of another kind, namely river cruise tourism. With the mighty Drava cutting through the city, and located just 20 km from the middle of the Danube, the waterways of Central Europe offer an enticing future for the city's tourism fortunes, and confirmed river cruise bookings for 2015 are already double those of 2014, according to the Osijek Tourist Board. The start of the first commercial flights between London Stansted and Osijek Airport by Ryanair is the start of what the city's authorities hope will be a boost in tourism figures for the city.
For an introduction to the city of Osijek, there is perhaps no better way than through the lens of Romulic and Stojcic:
