article imagePhoto essay: It's hell on the Costa del Sol in winter (video) Special

By Anne Sewell     Dec 27, 2013 in Travel
Fuengirola - Here we are in mid-winter, and what happens today? Brilliant warm sunshine, people sunbathing on the beach and a generally pleasant outlook. It's hell down here in winter! We've got the mid-winter blues ... blue seas, blue skies.
OK, so the writer may be exaggerating a bit about the hell side of things. And admittedly, there has been some really cold weather, blasting with gale force winds and lashing rain lately. But today? The most perfect mid-winter day ever, it seems.
But really, walking along the beachfront or kicking your feet in the sand is really bad news. Its supposed to be cold. Freezing cold. In fact, you can even see snow on the distant Sierra Nevada on the horizon (well Sierra Nevada DOES mean snowy range so that sort of makes sense).
Is it climate change, or just luck? Have a look at the photos and see for yourself.

Now, Digital Journal has published photo essays of Fuengirola before, but the beach scenes were of a different, more central area of town, on the other side of the port to where we are standing right now.

We are now in Los Boliches. The writer has just moved to the area, and is now "suffering" by living literally a few steps from all this splendor.
This side of town is a little different somehow, with a different vibe in the streets, maybe a little scruffier building-wise, except for all the hotels, and there are quite a few.
OK, so here is a view of the Sierra Nevada, all the way down near historic Granada, and you can see the snow - by the way, it's further away than it looks, the camera has a pretty darn good zoom lens:

One thing to bear in mind, if the wind should happen to change and blow across those peaks in this direction, well, our weather could change quite drastically. In the meantime, let's stroll on the beach in the warm sunshine, close to the water's edge:

It seems the tractors are out giving the beach a bit of a tidy-up:

But things are pretty quiet besides the odd tourist, local or tractor - loads of space on the beach to enjoy yourself:

There's even a bit of greenery on the beaches here and there:

A game of beach volleyball could be fun:

Or you could redo your amazing sandcastle village that got washed out by the rain last night:

Maybe do a little fancy rollerskating on the promenade or go jogging (all this damn healthy fresh air brings out the crazies you know):

You have a choice of ways to get around - walking, rollerskating, wheelchair or scooter are the options in this image:

All those gorgeous views and what do people do? Glue their noses and pinkies to their damn phones. Here you can stroll out on the short pier near the port, surrounded by beauty, and send text messages or "selfies" to friends (heaven forbid you should actually enjoy your surroundings):

Or take the dog for a walk, while texting of course - I sense a plea for help from the dog ("Take me walkies, PLEASE!"). Also important to notice the lady coming up behind him. Yes, she's doing it too.

Getting back to the pier, there are some great views from there:

All this incredibly boring fresh air tends to give one an appetite, and here comes the next complaint. Too much choice! Even with most of the beach chiringuitos (beach cafes) closed, there are still too many restaurants to choose from and way too many different types of cuisine. Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Spanish, Indian ... how is a person supposed to make up their mind?

Of course, there are also way too many hotels. How on earth do you decide where to sleep?
There's the four star Hotel Yaramar, right there on the beach front. Darn hotel not only has restaurants, bars and a disco inside, but it even has a beach club:

Further down in the direction of Benalmadena there's Confortel Fuengirola, also right on the beachfront:

Hotel Angela also looks like a great place to stay with a pool and garden:

And in between there are several unusual and attractive statues dotted along the promenade. Here's a homage to the good old peseta - a coin many Spaniards would really welcome back into their lives, if only given the chance:

And another pays homage to the global tourist in quite a cute way:

So, if you feel like a little "hell" come and join us - maybe the great weather will hold up over the weekend! Come do a little fishing...

... or just plain relax.

If viewing the above images wasn't enough, a video has been included at the top of the article with even more sunny views.
