article imageOp-Ed: Best southeast beaches in the U.S for Spring Break getaways

By Alyssa Sellors     Mar 3, 2014 in Travel
After a record breaking, bone-chilling winter coast to coast, spring cannot come soon enough. If you can't wait to get somewhere warmer, consider a few of these top Southeast U.S. beach destinations for your Spring Break getaway 2014.
“Best” is obviously a subjective term when it comes to ranking hot spots for Spring Breakers because it really depends on your age and interests, so this list is for our middle of the road vacationers who aren’t necessarily looking for the filming of MTV Spring Break, but they aren’t looking for Bingo night on the beach either. These southern locations are ideal for both families and singles looking to just soak in some sun and have fun.
Miami, Florida usually makes every “best of” list when it comes to beach destinations and this year was no exception. Miami was ranked #2 by U.S. News for the Best Spring Break Destinations of 2014, and Miami is great because it can be enjoyed by families and singles. Northern Miami Beach is where you will find more family-friendly beaches, as well as a number of popular art museums and theaters. South Beach of course is a little swankier with chic hotspots, nightclubs, and poolside hotel bars for the young or singles crowd. Looking for somewhere to stay, check out this Miami Beach hotel guide for suggestions on everything from boutique hotels to luxury resorts.
A little farther north of southern Florida is Virginia Beach. Virginia Beach is one of those beach towns that is not just about the beach, making it ideal for almost any age group. Travel Channel recently ranked the top five things to do in Virginia Beach which included renting a Surrey to take a trip down the famous boardwalk, checking out the famous music venue, The Jewish Mother, and taking a dip in the infinity rooftop pool at the Hilton that overlooks all of Virginia Beach, which happens to be one of the most popular Virginia Beach oceanfront hotels in the area.
Also making the U.S. News ranking for the best destinations of 2014 is South Padre Island in Texas. This may be a lesser known Spring Break destination for some but it is an up and coming area, especially for college aged students. The unique thing about this place is the mix of luxury resorts and eclectic hotels and bars. There are tons of things to do also, from kiteboarding to deep-sea fishing, or you can just relax on the sandy white beaches. This lesser known area is not as crowded as other destinations as well, making it that much more appealing for some. If you are looking to plan your Spring Break vacation to South Padre Island, check out U.S. News’s article on how to save money in South Padre.
Finally, no list of the best beaches in the southeast is complete with the infamous Panama City Beach, Florida, also known as the “Spring Break Capital” of Florida. Now, this destination is really best suited for the younger single crowd, but families can also find fun with tons of events and things to do beyond the beach. Pier Park is a new addition to PCB in the past few years where you can find great shopping, race Go Karts and check out the Ripley’s museum, which is perfect for families or young singles.
