Op-Ed: A visual tour of Hotel Unique in São Paulo, Brazil (Includes interview and first-hand account)

When finding Hotel Unique after a short walk from the park, this marvel of architecture was worthwhile visiting before I crossed its main door. I took a walk around it twice with my head up when checking its modern design from the outside. The construction of Hotel Unique resembles a half-melon structure supported by stilts and it was designed by a famous Brazilian architect, Ruy Ohtake. Once in a while I was peeking through the glass to check what was inside and noticed some nice samples of interior design.

Then a curious security man with a black suit and black shirt let me inspect the hotel for some five minutes and then asked if I didn’t want to enter it. I wasn’t looking like a potential resident for a night or two, with no big luggage around me but with a big Canon camera, he opened the front door and came inside with me.

Now I wanted to see it from the inside. The outside security man all of the sudden introduced me to a reception clerk who assigned me another security man who gently followed me some 5 metres behind and let me look around and take pictures. On the left side after entering the hotel there was a horse rider, obviously St. George fighting the dragon.

The opposite wall in the lobby was decorated with a spectacular display of alcohol bottles near a wine bar where snacks and alcohol are served. Opposite to the main window, there was a relaxation room, sort of library or bookstore/reading room, with modern art and design magazines on the shelves.

A curious security man soon came up and asked if I wanted to go to the restaurant upstairs. Once agreed he showed me the way to the elevator and let me travel there. Soon after I had exited the elevator, the waitress came up to me with typical service questions but I explained that the security guy let me up here to look around and take some pictures so she left me alone.

Although there were not many people in the upstairs restaurant (virtually nobody in the lobby) the place emanated with its chic, charm and elegance. Big windows with a lot of daylight, lobby, elevator and restaurant with spic and span clean everywhere.

Interior design was very well done, almost on the verge of minimalism with elements of live plants as nice additions to the entire decoration. Even the stunning looking colours that in Brazilian design play a big role were moderately balanced.

The hotel offers both social and corporate packages in their facilities as well as in the top restaurant and nearby spa from where the breathtaking skyline of São Paulo can be admired. The hotel offers apartments for overnight stay in Dream Red (Soul mates Never Die), Dream Blue (Just Relax) and Dream Purple (Hot’n Spicy) packages that are pretty costly for more than an average tourist.

The hotel services have great ratings on Trip Advisor website. As a marvel of modern architecture it’s a great place to stop by and take a look. Friendly people from the hotel staff I met there made it possible for me and I would strongly recommend visiting this place to everybody.
