Puerto Natales - A ferry carrying 17 passengers and a crew of 28 ran aground at Pass Kirke in the Chilean Fjords. All passengers and crew are unharmed but 40 tons of salmon were lost and more than 200 cattle drowned.
For reasons that are being investigated, on the morning of Monday August 18, in Kirke Pass (also known as Kirke Narrows), located about 50 kilometers southwest of the city of Puerto Natales in the Region of Magallanes and the Chilean Antarctica, the Ferry “Amadeo I” sailing from Puerto Natales towards Puerto Montt, ran aground in shallow water which caused a fissure in the cargo hold of the ship.
The ferry belonging to the Chilean Company "Navimag Ferries – Patagonia" (Naviera Magallanes S.A.) has capacity for 52 passengers, but on this trip (offseason) was carrying only 17 passengers and a crew of 28. The vessel was also transporting 250 cattle to the city of Puerto Montt, and 40 tons of farmed salmon which final destination was Brazil. The cargo of salmon was completely lost. Most of the cattle in the cargo hold drowned except about 40 animals that managed to escape from the cargo hold and survived after swimming to the shore. Additionally, the ship was carrying various cargo vehicles, trucks and cars.
Following the accident, the 17 passengers were evacuated unharmed and taken to Puerto Natales. There, they were contacted by the company to make arrangement for the continuation of their journey. Ten crew members were also removed from the ferry, while the remaining workers stayed with the ship to assist in the rescue operations.
Initially the ship presented an inclination of about 30 degrees; however, after a day since the accident, the ferry is almost sunk, with only its upper structures out of the water. The possibility of an oil spill from the vessel into the waters of the Kirke Channel has not been reported.
In a press release, Naviera Magallanes S.A. reported:
"At this time, the Ferry Amadeo I is semi-submerged, resting on the seabed. Navimag Ferries continues to operate, in coordination with the Maritime Authority, all necessary actions in order that the containment measures and contingency plan related to this process are fully satisfied."
