article imageChristmas Town USA, McAdeville, NC, lights went out Special

By Elizabeth Parker     Dec 23, 2013 in Travel
Charlotte - Christmas Town, USA, otherwise known as McAdenville, NC lost its glow on Saturday night. This past weekend was expected to be the busiest weekend of the season.
Waiting in the long line of cars to show my parents the beautiful lights of McAdenville, NC, a strange thing happened. The lights went out. The glow around the town went dark.

According to WCNC, Charlotte, a North Carolina TV station, around 9 p.m. on Saturday, December 21, 2013, the busiest weekend of the McAdenville light season, about 1500 homes lost their power due to an auto accident that knocked down power lines. The Charlotte Observer says the lights were turned back on around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday and ready to go again Sunday night for visitors.

The small town of only 700 residents garners an overwhelming number of visitors at this time of year as it shows off its Christmas spirit. Over 600,000 visitors will go through town according to the Charlotte Observer. Fortunately this was my second trip to the town this year. I had already seen the lights, but my parents will have to make a trip up later this week to see them.
I was present for the lights being turned on December 2, 2013 and have all my photos from the opening ceremony evening.

The opening ceremony had Santa present for the kids, carolers and other festivities. The lights are turned on each year by a student chosen for the privilege from McAdenville Elementary School.

Ian Hannon, the 2013 student from McAdenville Elementary, pulls the switch for the 2013 season of Christmas lights in McAdenville, NC.
This year Ian Hannon won the honor and I watched him pull the big switch with the help of Debbie Bellenger, while his parents watched. Anyone still wanting to go see the lights will need to make the trip to the McAdenville by December 26, 2013. The Charlotte Observer says "make a plan and be patient", with more details in the linked article.

The lights are on a timer and shut off on time no matter how many cars are still waiting in the long line up to get into town so be sure to line up early. According to the McAdenville official web site the lights will glow from 5:30 to 9:30 week nights and 5:30 to 11:00 on weekends until December 26, 2013.

Be prepared to be sitting in a pretty long line up. On Saturday night the line up we were sitting in looked to be a couple hours long on highway 29, slowly moving toward the turn into town. For opening ceremony I went up nice and early, parked the car, had a snack at a local diner and then walked the town. I highly recommend walking the town for the best view.
