As more women opt for tight fitting pants, they are seeking plastic surgery to make their crotch area look tidier and sleeker in both the revealing clothing and swimsuit attire. Plastic surgeons are offering what is dubbed the “labiaplasty” operation to decrease the size of the labia, making the new “designer vagina” look more attractive.
The Daily Mail reports many women in the U.S. are seeking plastic surgery to look good, but it’s not just the usual liposuction or butt lifts these days. Plastic surgeons now offer the opportunity to have skin removed around a woman’s private parts to reduce the size of the labia.
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the number of labiaplasty procedures performed between 2013 and 2014 have increased by 49 percent, as women wear tighter clothing.
But it is apparently not only the skin-hugging clothing that is causing the women to want the operation. With the prevalence of pornography these days, and with waxing procedures removing the hair from around the genitals, women are noticing things about their private parts they never had before.
One plastic surgeon, Jennifer Walden says that the new labiaplasty has become one of the most popular cosmetic procedures requested by women.
“For better or worse, a rise in online images, both pornographic and those of women wearing very little, has made women aware of areas they may not have noticed before.”
While the procedure is mostly cosmetic, Walden went on to say that for women who have enlarged labia, the operation can also be life-changing. She said some women suffering from enlarged labia, besides the unflattering look they have in tight clothing, often experience discomfort during sex and the procedure can really help them. She noted that the labiaplasty is “one of the fastest rising procedures in terms of popularity” and that it can prove to be life-changing for many patients.
The New York Post quotes Dr. Richard Swift as saying that those who have enlarged labia feel uncomfortable and exposed.
“One of my patients was particularly self-conscious doing Pilates in a leotard — so much so that she was afraid to do certain moves.”
Critics have stated that the new “designer vagina” procedure is likely to add to the many body-shaming controversies experienced by women these days. While plastic surgeons are obviously all for the procedure, critics are not in agreement with the trend.
Catriona Harvey-Jenner notes in a Cosmopolitan article that the new “designer vagina” trend is making younger women more closely scrutinize their private parts. She feels this is wrong.
“The fact is, we were born how we were born. Our vaginas were never meant to look like the Mona Lisa. They’re just… vaginas. And any man, woman or other who has something to say about how they don’t ‘measure up’ probably shouldn’t have been given the privilege to look at them in the first place.”
