Triple homicide in California – Update

Update Oct. 23, 2015:
The three people who were shot as noted in the article below have now been identified by the Calaveras County Coroner. The trespassers – victims are: Robert Daniel Haney a 60-year-old of Modesto, Ca., Terry Glen Jr. of Waterford 44-years-old, Wes David Smith of Snelling 55-years-old.

Calaveras County in California is no stranger to bad news, and the news got worse for three unnamed individuals yesterday. On top of trying to recover from the recent Butte Fire, residents of Rail Road Flat, in Calaveras County, California now have another triple homicide to be concerned with.

According to a press release from Calaveras County Sheriff Deputy and Information Officer Sgt. Anthony Eberhardt :

Yesterday, 10/20/2015 in the early morning hours, a resident of Rail Road Flat woke up to find three people allegedly attempting to steal part of a marijuana crop. 38 year-old Leon Michael Grammer found the three individuals trespassing on the property and asked his brother who lives in Jackson, Ca. to offer assistance at the property. Jackson is roughly 45 minutes away, however, the 30 year-old brother, Jeremiah Lee Barrett responded in time to find the three alleged marijuana thieves running along the road. The three were running due to the older brother having fired shots at them from an unidentified style of firearm.

After being questioned by Sheriff Detectives, it was determined the younger brother, Barrett, allegedly shot the three victims with a shotgun. Two of the victims were laying in a dirt road, the other was lying alongside the road.
None of the deceased victims have been named yet due to next of kin notification issues.

After being questioned by the Detectives, both Barrett and Grammer were arrested. Grammer was charged with Accessory (Penal Code 32) and Conspiracy (Penal Code 182) and was given a bail amount of $30,000.

Barrett was charged with Murder (Penal Code 187), and Conspiracy also. Barrett’s bail was set at $2,500,000.

As a former resident of precisely the same area of Calaveras County, this reporter will offer that this is not the first time this has happened on this road. In the late 1980s a similar situation arose which also resulted in the loss of three lives. That homicide led to one person serving a life term for the three murders and his wife spent time in prison for accessory to murder. Despite an exhaustive search, no records have been found for Robert Cunningham’s homicidal episode so far back, but the memory is refreshed by yesterdays occurrence.
