Things to know before you make that final move to Miami

And we’re not talking just what the rent or job market is like, either. Looking at the news can also give you an idea of what goes on around the area you want to move to, and it’s a practice that one should always follow when moving to a new and unfamiliar area.

Spring Break

You might think Miami is the greatest place ever while you’re on spring break, but there’s always a huge difference between spending a week or two on vacation and living somewhere. In fact, some things are best savored in short amounts. The clubbing and beach partying during spring break are awesome, but not so great when you live right next to them – and have to worry about rent and work.

Crime

Before you move anywhere, even to another part of a big city, you should grab a local newspaper or read the web version. Some places have rather strange crimes. Of course, the news covers other important things you should learn before doing something as life-changing as a move. For example, things like Florida’s recent passing of a bill to block gay adoption might be good to know beforehand. It helps to know before you move that if you transition from a backwater town to a bustling big city, your chances of being mugged skyrocket. Things like that!

Living

Moving often entails a new job, new people, maybe even a whole new life. You might need a lot less to live decently in one state than in another. Salaries often reflect that cost of living, but not always. Miami is one of those states where the cost of living is high, and your salary might not be. Not to say it’s impossible or hard to live in Miami, it’s just a different experience. The weather can also drastically affect how you live in an area. It rains in Florida – a lot. This much rain can change not only the temperature, but your plans as well. If you happen to live in an area with a high year-round temperature, AC might jack up your bill, so be prepared.

Business

But what if you’re not interested in moving to Miami for personal reasons? You may want to move to start a business in Florida, specifically Miami. There’s actually some good news for you there, since jobs are scarce. Of course people are always happy to move to a well-known hotspot like Miami, but maybe businesses aren’t so hot on that idea.

There’s plenty of Miami office space, and it’s likely easier to find some there than in some other bustling cities, but you’ve got to consider a few things a single person or family moving in wouldn’t. Unlike a person simply moving for fun, you’ve got to consider whether or not your business is a good fit for Miami. If you’re a sporting goods store that only sells supplies for a good ol’ game of Cricket, perhaps you need a different location.
