Uproar after picture shows Prince George feeding dog ice cream

In honour of the prince’s third birthday, Kensington Palace released four pictures of Prince George. One of the pictures shows the three-year-old kneeling on a blanket with Lupo, the family dog. George is holding an ice cream cone in front of the dog’s mouth although Lupo seems more interested in the prince than the cone. The ice cream was said to be white chocolate.

Many experts say feeding a dog dairy products can cause digestive problems that can result in diarrhoea and vomiting . And chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to animals. Giving chocolate to a dog can affect the animal’s heart and result in seizures and death.

The RSPCA told MailOnline while it was nice of the prince to try and keep Lupo cool in hot weather, it is better to give dogs non-human food such as ice containing ingredients dogs can digest.

Many people expressed their anger on social media about giving ice cream to a dog. While some of the displeasure was directed at the prince’s parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, others took out their anger directly on the three-year-old. One person questioned why George was trying to kill his dog as if a three-year-old would know it was harmfulwhile another said the prince should go to jail and described what happened as “irresponsible animal cruelty paid for by the taxpayer.”

Another person referred to George in a post as a “monarchist monster.”

But not everyone thinks what the third in line to the thrown did was a big deal. Although chocolate can be deadly to dogs, dairy products only adversely affect dogs that are lactose intolerant. Huffington Post UK quotes Dr. Bruce Fogel of the London Vet Clinic as saying giving ice cream to a dog that is not lactose intolerant can be a “perfect hot weather coolant.” He pointed out dogs do not sweat and can suffer heat stroke faster than humans can.

And not everyone on social media was ready to pounce on the three-year-old and his parents. One person noted the ice cream wasn’t in the dog’s mouth. Another posted some of the comments about the prince were “over-the-top,” noting Prince George was probably not the first child to feed ice cream to a dog. Another posted her dog has had cereal with milk every morning of his 12 years and the criticism was “ridiculous.”

Victoria Arbiter is a Royal Commentator for CNN, CTV and other media outlets. She tweeted, “OMG we really are a nation of moaners and complainers. I doubt Lupo’s getting a Magnum w/every meal. It was a moment.”

Judging by the reaction on social media, it was quite a moment.
