Jeff and Hillary Whittington, from San Diego, accepted the Inspiration Award at the 6th annual Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast on Thursday, and they shared their story of Ryland's decision and gender transition.
According to NY Daily News, the parents presented a video that showed a 5-year-old Ryland's female-to-male transition.
The video revealed how Ryland suffered from hearing problems when she was a year-old, and eventually she was fitted with cochlear implants. When she learnt how to speak, she declared to her parents that she was a boy.
Jeff and Hillary said despite Ryland having a pink room and being dressed in girl outfits, she still preferred to play with masculine toys and participate in boy activities.
The parents were confused as to what they should have done, and they initially thought that it was just a phrase. Eventually Ryland rejected all things feminine. At one point in time she said that she was going to cut her hair when the family dies, because she wanted to be a boy. She also asked "why did God make me like this?"
After Ryland made her declaration, Jeff and Hillary decided to do some research, which led them to believe their child was transgender.
According to Medical Daily, Jeff and Hillary were alarmed when they found out that 41 percent of transgender or gender-nonconforming people have attempted to kill themselves at some point in their lives, according to a the most recent National Transgender Discrimination Survey.
The couple acknowledged that their child was just five, but they felt that it was time to let their child feel on the inside reflect on her outside. They cut her hair down and they started to use pronouns such as "him" and "he" instead of "her" and "she" and they felt that they made the right decision, even after some of their friends and family spurned their decision.
Jeff said that one of the most inspiring things that Harvey Milk has done was to encourage people to let their voices be heard, as well as allowing them to see them for their authentic selves and to just be themselves.
