article imageOp-Ed: Toronto let's go spend at the Exhibition! Special

By KJ Mullins     Aug 21, 2014 in Lifestyle
Toronto - Every year over 1 million people visit Toronto's Canadian National Exhibition, known to locals as The Ex. Those visitors will open their wallets for great buys at the shopping areas, food vendors and to enjoy the carnival midway.
The Ex brings the province of Ontario about $80,000,000 each year. Some families save up all year so they can go wild for a day of summer fun while others hope to get great buys inside the International shopping venues. Others will try their luck at the annual casino that stays open all night long.
That money helps to employ 5,000 youth each year who spend a little over two weeks handling the crowds that will appear.

The Ex is slower during the first week until the weekend. Those running the games watch the sky for hints of rain knowing that any clouds will reduce their daily take.
Inside the Direct Energy Building where the International Shopping booths are vendors can get aggressive hawking their wares. Women are often the targets with body creams to keep skin young are poured onto wrists as often as possible. Even if told upfront that you will not be spending any money at their booths their sales people will pitch their wares with a vengeance. A few vendors will berate those who walk away from the sales fever but most are considerate.

New food is offered up each year. Last year a health scare took place when Epic Burgers had quite a few people at local hospitals for food poisoning. This year Chocolate Fried Chicken is all the rage. In total there are 117 different food venues at this year's Ex.

Of course there are still things that cost no money other than the price of admission. The shows and exhibitions are free. The Canadian military has their exhibition, this year inside the Direct Energy Building because of construction on the grounds.
So let's go to the Ex this year but make sure to be ready to open up your wallet. Spending is what it is all about!
