article imageOp-Ed: Apple Chief Cook proudly gay

By Robert Weller     Oct 30, 2014 in Lifestyle
San Francisco - It comes as no surprise that the CEO of Apple is gay, but few have put it such a way that will offend homophobes. For many Christian fundamentalists, and members of other religions, being a homosexual is a one-way ticket to hell.
Of course the fact that Apple has such aesthetically appealing products may solidify that notion that gays are more artistic than straights. That is as silly as that they are the devil’s children.
No doubt hiding their sexual choice while trying to climb the corporate ladder may have pushed them harder than other groups. The same thing is said about Jews.
Cook said he has never kept his choices from friends and colleagues, but felt it was time to do what can be done for others facing the same dilemma.
Without mentioning his name in Bloomberg Businessweek, Cook made it clear that working for the late heterosexual, Steve Jobs, helped. “… I’ve had the good fortune to work at a company that loves creativity and innovation and knows it can only flourish when you embrace people’s differences. Not everyone is so lucky.”
If anything, being gay has helped him understand what the challenges other minority groups face.
“The world has changed so much since I was a kid. America is moving toward marriage equality, and the public figures who have bravely come out have helped change perceptions and made our culture more tolerant. “ But he said serious discrimination continues to hurt people.
“I don’t consider myself an activist, but I realize how much I’ve benefited from the sacrifice of others. So if hearing that the CEO of Apple is gay can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to anyone who feels alone, or inspire people to insist on their equality, then it’s worth the trade-off with my own privacy.”
“And I will personally continue to advocate for equality for all people until my toes point up.”
