Ontario boy, 7, saves classmate who was dangling from ski lift

The boy, along with three classmates, were on a ski lift chair at the Lakeridge Ski Resort in Uxbridge, Ontario, just northeast of Toronto, when the accident occurred. Had it not been for the actions of the seven-year-old, his classmate might have been seriously injured or worse.

According to the Durham Regional Police Service, they received a call at 11:15 a.m. Thursday. They were asked to assist paramedics after a young boy had fallen from a ski lift at Lakeridge.

The boy was on a chair lift with his classmates when he lost one his skis as the lift was going uphill. When he turned around to look for it, he slipped out of the chair. Luckily, he managed to hold on.

The seven-year-old now being described as a hero grabbed him. Although he was not strong enough to bring him back into the chair, he managed to prevent him from falling until help arrived.

About two minutes later, others arrived. Staff stopped the lift that was about 40 feet off the ground and ran over with a tarp to use to catch the dangling boy. One of those who went to help was a member of the ski patrol and is also a paramedic. Unfortunately, when the boy fell into the tarp, he bounced and went into the hill. John Tustian, the director of outside operations at Lakeridge, said, “The boy was pretty upset, he was crying and in pain.” But he was conscious and staff members were able to stabilize him until paramedics arrived.

The injured boy was taken to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto where he was reported to be in good condition and is expected to fully recover.

Sgt. Bill Calder said, “For a seven-year-old to have that type of maturity and willpower, that is something that goes beyond the expectation for any kid—it’s basically heroic.”

Durham police will be recommending the seven-year-old and staff members of the ski resort receive citizen awards.
