Onesies and Uggs deemed NSFW in Australia

Public sector employess working at the State Immigration Department in Australia have been officially banned from wearing onesies and Ugg boots at work.

Jan Dorrington from the Immigration Department clarified the new rules while addressing an Australian Senate committee. During proceedings she stated, “There are certain things that wouldn’t constitute professional business dress and that would be things like jeans, thongs (flip flops), Ugg boots and so on.”

Although office attire is becoming more informal and relaxed across Australia — and indeed in many ‘Western’ style economies as work becomes increasingly decentralised — it would seem that down under, certain standards don’t apply to those who earn their living in the public sector.

Additional restrictions also determined that employess at the Department of Immigration will not be allowed to hold a second, concurrent job, and neither will they be able to use personal mobile phones while at the workplace.

In a clear, and rather amusing, example of intergenerational conflict, a bemused Senator Sarah Hanson Young asked with a heavy dose of incredulity “I couldn’t imagine that many people would be rocking up to work in Ugg boots.” To which Dorrington then quipped “you’d be surprised, Senator.“

Dorrington’s revelatory insights were corroborated by her Head of department Mike Pezzullo who confirmed that he had been asked on several occasions to adjudicate whether such attire was acceptable or not. “At one point Ms Dorrington came to me with a number of matters that had arisen and I was asked to, if you like, rule or make a determination around something called the wearing of onesies, I didn’t even know what a onesie was and I was shown pictures of such garb.”
