Malaysian capital to be one of world’s most connected cities

Part of the initiative is to improve the city’s public information technology facilities, web-based applications as well as broadband connectivity.
Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, however, said the goal is not just upgrading Internet speed but promoting tourism and the economy as well.
“Besides the higher-end consumers which would be the main focus of the industry, City Hall will pay particular importance towards providing Information Communications Technology (ICT) services for the needs of the tourists, urban poor and government segments,” Tengku Adnan told the New Straits Times.
For visitors, the Kuala Lumpur government is taking steps to standardize ICT infrastructure within the city as a way to spur tourism.
“City Hall will start reaching out to the relevant government department and agencies to begin collaboration efforts in order to garner the required support and expertise to make this initiative a reality,” Tengku Adnan said.
“It will also start working with the leading authorities globally in order to obtain an international perspective,” he added.
The Malaysian government has been inviting businessmen to invest in the rapidly developing “connected cities” sector as the country aims to become the center of “smart city” in Southeast Asia.
Last month, officials of 10 of United Kingdom’s leading technology companies visited Kuala Lumpur and the Johor state to share their expertise in a bid to contribute to Malaysia’s “smart city” vision.
“These companies’ innovations are key to addressing the challenges that large cities face. These challenges include growing populations, increased demand for energy and the integration of technology into citizens’ everyday lives,” said Niraj Saraf, lead technologist for Urban Living at Innovate UK.
“We believe these companies have huge growth potential and could become a vital part of the global Connected Cities industry in the near future.”
The third most connected country in Southeast Asia, Malaysia ranks 21st in global connectedness among 140 countries, according to DHL Global Connectedness Index in its survey last year.
