article imageMake any space into an apartment with a 'Cubitat'

By Karen Graham     Jan 29, 2015 in Lifestyle
Toronto - Think about this - If you take the essential "guts" of a house and put it all together in a pile, you could easily come up with a cube about 10x10x10 feet. That is exactly what was presented this past weekend at the Toronto Interior Design Show.
CUBITAT by Urban Capital and Nichetto Studio is a 10′ x 10′ x 10′ customizable, for want of a better word than "object," I will choose the word "box." But the thing about this box is its versatility. Forget about conventional homes, where everything is placed against walls, with plumbing and wiring spread all over creation. If you stop and think about it, there is a humongous amount of wasted space.
The designers at Urban Capital are very well known. They have been behind a number of leading condominium projects, like Smart House and the River City complex. So when Urban Capital teamed up with Venice and Stockholm-based Nichetto Studio, founded by world-famous designer Luca Nichetto, and TreeHugger founder Graham Hill, it was a no-brainer when they came up with something that fits into the lifestyles of the global community today.

The Cubitat is described as a "plug and play living space." In a 10-foot cube, you will find a kitchen, bathroom, bed, laundry, storage and closet space.
Now, no one get overly excited yet because the Cubitat is still in the prototype phase. But the designers say buyers will soon be able to buy and customize their homes online before shipping.

The space-saving design of the Cubitat is its biggest selling point, next to the customization allowable to the buyer. With the plug and play design, it can be placed in the middle of any empty space, regardless of the location. The only hook-up required is plumbing, water lines and someplace to get electricity.

Remember when closet and storage space was mentioned? How does 10-feet of closet and storage space sound? I would venture to guess that if two closets were not needed, one could be customized to include all shelves.

If anyone is wondering how to get a 10x10x10 foot cube into a building, don't feel alone. That is one of the problems the designers are working on. Unless something is done to facilitate getting the unit through a standard door, it will be "back to the drawing board." But never fear, there are plans to do the cube up in a prefabricated design that can be easily reassembled.
