Lion caged for 10+ years feels grass for the first time

By Owen Weldon     May 18, 2015 in Environment
A lion in Brazil that hasn't felt grass in more than 10 years was filmed feeling grass after it arrived at the Ranch of the Gnomes.
Rancho dos Gnomos is an animal sanctuary in Brazil, and they work towards building better homes for rescued animals. The video, which was uploaded to the sanctuary's YouTube channel, explains how the lion was imprisoned in a circus for 13 years and he was kept in a small cage where he could barely move.
The video of the lion, named Will, was filmed back in 2006, but it was published recently because the sanctuary wanted to raise awareness of their campaign to raise funds so they can locate to a more rural area, away from Sao Paulo, where they are currently based. The video was published a few days ago, but since then it has been viewed more than 2 million times.
At the start of the video, the lion is inside a cage, but released, where he makes his way onto the grass. From there, the lion can be seen pawing at the dirt, as well as rolling around in the grass
Will ended up living at the sanctuary for five years and passed away in 2011 at the age of 18.
