article imageCrowdfunding raises $93K for gay Georgia son disowned by family

By Brett Wilkins     Sep 5, 2014 in Internet
Kennesaw - Things didn't go so well when 20-year-old Daniel Ashley Pierce came out to his Christian parents at their Georgia home last year.
As Upworthy reports, Daniel knew things would get heated so he secretly recorded an intervention his family staged in an attempt to "save" him.
"Daniel, I want to tell you before I say anything else, that I love you," Daniel's mother begins before ominously adding, "I know that you're not going to believe that."
"I have know that you're gay since you were a tiny little boy," she continues.
"Then you would know by this point that it's not a choice," says Daniel.
Apparently not: "You have made a choice," she accuses.
Daniel: "I have not made a choice. I have been, from the moment I've come out of my mother's uterus, I have been that way."
Mom: "You can deny it all you want to, but I believe in the word of God, and God creates nobody that way. It's a path that you have chosen."
Daniel then counters by citing scientific studies which have found that sexual orientation may be determined in early childhood or even before birth.
"Well you go by all the scientific stuff you want to, I'm going by the word of God," his mother retorts before informing Daniel that she will no longer support him and that he must leave his home lest anyone think she approves of his homosexuality.
Things deteriorate further from there, with Daniel's mother growing increasingly irate before physically assaulting him after he rejects the notion that his father raised him properly. A man, presumably his father, can be heard calling him a "fucking queer" in the background during the attack.
"You're a disgrace," the winded man spats.
As disgusting as all of this is, there's a silver lining. A friend of Daniel's posted the video on YouTube, where it has received more than 5.8 million views. That same friend also started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for Daniel's living expenses as he struck out on his own. The goal was to raise $2,000. As of Friday, Daniel has received more than $93,000.
"Thank you to everyone from around America and all over the world for your support in the past several days," writes Daniel. "This has been a rough time for me and I never imagined that so many people would show such overwhelming compassion and generosity."
Daniel doesn't want any more donations. Instead, he is asking anyone interesting in helping combat the LGBTQ youth homeless crisis to support the Atlanta-based Lost-n-Found Youth organization.
