According to a recent news release on Oct 15, 2014 “Parents, educators and all those interested in public education in Illinois will soon have new data and online features at their fingertips to better gauge kindergarten through 12th-grade student performance and school learning environments.”
Aiming to go beyond just test scores, the new tool is to be an online tool giving a total look at schools, allowing for all to be an informed member of a child’s education. A waiver from the U.S. Department of Education was received by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) in April of 2014 in respect to the No Child Left Behind Act. This allowed the state, districts and schools to work efficiently together in order to improve the reporting of school data. The Report Card for this year proved to show a decrease in the state’s dropout rate. At 2.2 percent the dropout rate is now at its lowest in 15 years. Now at 86 percent, proving a huge improvement is the rise in the graduation rate since 2013 by three percentage points.
To further assist in the bettering of schools in Illinois and other states are the efforts of the University of Chicago Consortium on Chicago School Research. The University of Chicago Consortium conducts research in order to pinpoint what exactly works to incite successful students as well as improvements in the school system. The informative site allows for visitors to read a series of reports titled “Free to Fail or On-Track to College.” The reports, written by a number of authors, view the struggles and encounters of high school students as they maneuver through high school and what schools do to help.
