article image‘Airbnb for dogs’ DogVacay raised $25 Million

By Amanda Byas     Nov 16, 2014 in Lifestyle
Being dubbed the Airbnb for dogs, DogVacay just raised $25 million, bringing their total venture funding up to $47 million, the Fortune reported. The service allows pet owners to find sitters for their pet while vacationing, for example.
DogVacay received the Series B1 round of funding from GSV Capital and Omers Ventures, as well as other investors including Benchmark, Foundation Capital, and a few others, according to Fortune.
One consumer said they tried the service, which connects both sitters and pet owners online, for the very first time in the last year after trying to avoid boarding their dog, Rupert. They are very sensitive when it comes to Rupert’s feelings, which lead them to explore DogVacay.
The options ranged from $35 to $80 a night. Most of the traditional boarding locations in Manhattan charge at least $80 a night.
DogVacay offers options from $35 all the way up to $80 per night. Most of the sitters shown on DogVacay contain a very detailed summary of their services, photos, reviews from past clients and more.
For some sitters, working with DogVacay has led to a luxurious full-time job that pays the rent and other bills. Michael Lam, a DogVacay pet sitter, told CNBC that he started working with DogVacay when he was a programmer for Goldman Sachs. Now his new occupation is a certified dog trainer and he is a full-time dog sitter.
Even though DogVacay won’t go into details on its revenues, we can conclude that the sites bookings have grown tenfold in 2013 alone.
Corinna Pieloch, a DogVacay spokeswoman told Business Insider, “DogVacay has paid out millions of dollars to their 11,000 hosts across the United States and Canada.”
The American Pet Products Association has estimated $55 billion spent on their pets alone in 2013, including an average of $327 on boarding annually.
