Bakersfield - Don and Maxine Simpson had what anyone would call a lasting relationship. After 61 years and a few months of marriage both passed away together, within four hours of each other.
Don and Maxine spent almost their entire lives together. After meeting at a bowling alley they married and adopted two children. He was 90 years old and she was 87. Both of them knew it was time to go so they spent their last moments together, talking and holding hands. Don fell and broke his hip leading to a decline in his health. Maxine passed away first from a cancer she had battled for years and Don followed a few hours later.
One of their grandchildren, Melissa Sloan, was there caring for them and saw their last moments. As she put it "they left this world together."
While the original report came from the Bakersfield Californian, the Associated Press picked it up. Other local outlets covered it as well and people have called it a "beautiful story" among other positive comments.
Heartwarming stories such as this happen more often than many think. Another couple was together for 73 years, as long as many people have lived, and died together as well. Events such as these may have happened more than we realize, we just now have the media to report them.
Today divorce is a big topic in the media as well as in average life. Many online claim they have the answer from tips to books. Stories such as these give hope to those looking for the elusive long-lasting relationship.
