Weight-loss pills with potentially dangerous side-effects that include cancer have been seized from a store in Canada. Health Canada took the action this week, removing L-Showm Weight Loss Pills from a store in Burnaby, B.C., near Vancouver.
Health Canada has issued a warning on its website that noted that these pills are not authorized for use in the country and that testing showed L-Showm Weight Loss Pills contain an undisclosed ingredient called phenolphthalein.
They advise that:
Phenolphthalein, which was previously used as a laxative, is no longer authorized for sale in Canada because it may cause cancer. Additional side-effects associated with phenolphthalein include decreased blood pressure, skin rash and gastrointestinal bleeding.
The weight-loss pills were removed from the U-Box store on Kingsway in Burnaby. Health Canada has not had reports of ill effects from using the weight-loss pills in question. The agency said they are proactively testing "additional weight management products" in Canada to ensure there are not others with potentially harmful side-effects.
