Video: 'If only for a second' unique makeover for cancer patients

By Anne Sewell     Dec 21, 2013 in Health
Brussels - A few words inspired the Mimi Foundation, in collaboration with Leo Burnett, to create a unique makeover experience for 20 cancer patients. Those words were "You know what I miss the most? Being carefree.”
In June this year, the Mimi Foundation Support and Welfare Centers in Belgium collaborated with Leo Burnett to give a unique makeover experience to 20 cancer patients. The patients were invited to a studio, where they experienced a complete, and very unusual, makeover of their hair and makeup.
The difference was, during the makeover, they had to keep their eyes completely closed. When they were finally allowed to open their eyes, a photograph then captured and immortalized the moment as they discovered their new, and rather unusual, look. As the Mimi Foundation says, it allowed them to forget their illness, "if only for a second."
The project ran in two different stages. Firstly the Mimi Foundation and Burnett joined up with photographer Vincent Dixon as well as director Coban Beutelstetter.
As each patient received their makeover and opened their eyes, the moment was captured.

The second stage was to organize a photo exhibition for the patients' families, which happened on November 7th, 2013. This exhibition revealed for the first time all the photos taken by Dixon.
Almost immediately, smiling faces were seen all over the room. For a short while, cancer was off the minds of the family members as well.
The video above was uploaded to YouTube this month and shows the process of the makeover together with voice overs from some of the patients involved.
Now a photo book, entitled "If only for a second" has been published which can be ordered online, with the entire proceeds to be donated to the Mimi Foundation to provide funding for well-being centers.

The book contains 20 photographs of the project participants and each photo is accompanied by a description giving the name of the person and the date and time the photo was taken and the image shows the model forgetting about their illness, if only for a moment. The photos, some of which are included in this article, will make you smile too, and that is the heart of the idea of the project "If only for a second," to spread smiles.
