62-year-old Spanish woman gives birth to her third child

Healthy baby at 62

The woman, Lina Alvarez, who is a doctor, gave birth to a healhty baby girl, giving her daugther her name, Lina, on October 10. Baby Lina was born through in-vitro fertilization and by cesarean section and weighed 2.4 kilograms (5.3 pounds). Dr. Alvarez and her new baby left the Lucus Augusti Hospital in the northwestern Spanish city of Lugo on Tuesday.

“I feel phenomenal,” she told reporters. “I couldn’t be better. I’m very very grateful to life for such a precious little thing.” She said she is “looking forward to resting for at least a couple of days now so I can enjoy time with my daughter and recover.”

“My emotions,” she added. “Have got the better of me and I’ve been crying a lot out of happiness.” The third-time mother insisted women her age are capable of giving birth and said they should make the decision, not their gynecologist.

She said she had a “normal preganancy that developed naturally,” and that she enjoyed the experience. She did not mention her living situation or whether there was a partner in her life.

Her second child, Samuel, is now just 10, so Alvarez birthed him, also born healthy, when she was 52. Her first child, Exquio, who has cerebral palsy due to a medical error during her pregnancy, was born when Alverez was 34; Exquio is now 28.

“My eldest son’s smile since Lina was born is worth much more than all the criticism I might get for this,” the proud mother said.
