JBS Tolleson Inc. has recalled 6.5 million pounds of beef products because of possible Salmonella contamination after 57 people in 16 states became ill. The raw, "non-intact" beef items that included ground beef were shipped nationwide.
Tolleson, Arizona-based JBS Tolleson Inc is recalling 6,500,966 pounds of "various raw, non-intact beef products" due to an outbreak of salmonella, the United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Thursday.
This is a Class 1 Recall, meaning this is a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.
The beef products, including the ground beef, were packaged on various dates from July 26, 2018, to Sept. 7, 2018. The list of all the products can be viewed HERE (PDF). The product labels can be viewed HERE (PDF).
All the products under this recall bear the establishment number “EST. 267” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail locations and institutions nationwide. People are urged to check their freezers to make sure they don't have the recalled meat.
FSIS first notification
The FSIS was first notified on September 5, 2018, of an investigation of Salmonella Newport illnesses with reported consumption of several beef products, based on patient cases. The first store receipt potentially linking the purchase of an FSIS-regulated product to a case-patient was received on September 19, 2018; FSIS was then able to begin traceback of ground beef products.
Eight additional receipts and/or shopper cards have allowed for traceback investigations to be completed. FSIS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state public health and agriculture partners have now determined that raw ground beef was the probable source of the reported illnesses. Traceback has identified JBS as the common supplier of the ground beef products.
The most common symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated product. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days and most people recover without treatment. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact their healthcare provider.
