Maggi noodles banned in around the world

According to the Faculty for Food Safety and Quality of India, many national health authorities have placed a suspension order on imports of Maggi noodles (branded as “2-minute noodles,” of which there are nine different varieties). Maggi is an international brand, operating out of India, of seasonings, instant soups and noodles owned by Nestle since 1947.

The reason for the import ban is because the noodles contain high levels of lead. The levels of lead were 17 times beyond permissible limits.

As an example of the international concern, the Australian Department of Agriculture have told NDTV that: “This is a precautionary measure in response to reports of levels of lead that are potentially non-compliant with the permissible levels in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code).” In addition to the international bans, the selling and distribution of the noodles has also be banned throughout India.

Lead in food is a major health issue. Lead affects most body processes and is toxic to organs and tissues, such as the heart, intestines and kidneys. Lower levels of lead are also a concern, lead is associated with impaired cognitive function, including reduced IQ, and behavior difficulties.

The source of the lead in the noodles is unknown. However, lead in soil can be absorbed by plants grown for food.

Maggi have been involved in a similar food health issue in the U.S. Maggi’s products are distributed to the U.S. via Nestle India. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has confiscated samples of the noodles due to similar concerns.

Other countries in receipt of the noodles include Canada, U.K., Singapore and Kenya. The ban on the distribution of the noodles has affected the share price of Nestle India. Nestle is challenging the ban within India and has approached a high court in Mumabi for a judicial review.

In related news, another Indian food company Complan Foods has received complaints that worms and insects have been found floating in the company’s milk energy drink.
