article imageListeria fears spark recall of over 9,000 cases of frozen corn

By Megan Hamilton     Sep 2, 2015 in Health
More than 9,000 cases of frozen corn are being recalled by Bonduelle USA Inc., due to potential Listeria contamination, the Food and Drug Administration announced in a press release on Monday.
Some of the frozen cut corn was distributed to Market Basket stores and Save-A-Lot discount grocery stores, Consumerist reports.
The frozen corn involved in the recall was distributed to New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Massachusetts, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia, Maryland, Florida, North Carolina, Lousiana, and Mississippi, the FDA reported, according to CNN.
"The company has not received any complaints in relation to this product and is not aware of any illnesses associated with the product to date," Bonduelle USA said in a statement Monday.
The recall involves 9,335 cases of frozen corn and was initiated after a product tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes in Tennessee. The company stopped distribution of the product and is investigating along with the FDA to determine the cause of the problem, according to the statement.
[i]Listeria[i] is a bacterium that can cause serious and potentially fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems, USA Today reports. Healthy people may suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, stiffness, nausea, severe headache, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, but in pregnant women, Listeria has been known to cause stillbirths and miscarriages.
Listeria has been the culprit behind recalls of ice cream and frozen vegetables earlier this year.
