Lead in children’s water bottles prompts recall by L.L. Bean

The Freeport, Maine-based company specializing in clothing and outdoor recreation equipment is recalling approximately 6,700 of the water bottles it sold online, in retail stores, and through the L.L. Bean catalog from July 2015 through May of this year.

The recall notice on the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) website on July 21 states: “The lead solder at the exterior base of the bottle contains high levels of lead. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health issues.”

The CPSC says the bottles were manufactured in China and distributed by GSI Outdoors, Inc. of Spokane, Washington. There have been no adverse reactions reported in connection with the recalled products.

The recalled product is a 13.5-ounce insulated water bottle with a label that includes the item identification number 297684 on the bottom of each bottle. The stickers also had the codes “PO#844” and “BB2D2-LLB-R45-0413.”

The bottles were available in five printed graphic designs:
*Dino Bones;
*Flower Power;
*Orange Grid camo;
*Purple Tie Dye Butterfly, and
*Robo Shark.
Federal law bars any person from selling products subject to a publicly-announced voluntary recall by a manufacturer or a mandatory recall ordered by the Commission. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled water bottles and contact L.L.Bean for a full refund.

If you have the affected product, please call L.L.Bean, Inc., at 800-555-9717 for return packaging and mailing instructions.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend Karen Graham, who served as Editor-at-Large at Digital Journal. She was 78 years old. Karen's view of what is happening in our world was colored by her love of history and how the past influences events taking place today. Her belief in humankind's part in the care of the planet and our environment has led her to focus on the need for action in dealing with climate change. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
