Sweet video as 7-week-old baby Lachlan hears for first time

Some good news for a change, this one is.

Now in the video, before hearing sounds he does some crying as the earpiece is affixed to his right ear but once the things starts working he’s suddenly transfixed. It’s a wonderful moment for him, clearly — he hears! It’s Mom’s voice, and other voices, soothing, talking to one another, and he pays rapt attention.

One voice, the audiologist perhaps, tells Mom the fact her boy has stopped blinking and moving means he’s tuning in. If you were Mom wouldn’t you be ready to cry? Michelle Lever is Mom and while we don’t get a clear shot of her face, you can hear the emotion in her voice. Her son is now two and she’s commented on the video since it got so much attention online; it remains an emotional story for her.

“When they turned the headphones on and Lachlan smiled and his face lit up, it was the most magical thing I’d ever seen in my life,” Mom told the Daily Mail Australia. “It’s such a happy, special moment. My baby’s world just opened up. Now that it’s gone viral I’m reliving that moment all over again.”

Lachlan: Hearing, speech improves

Lachlan is doing very well and is much-adored by his family, including sisters Chloe, 9, and Jessica, 6. Mom says that he continues to have special needs related to his hearing but he’s not holding back on talk because of them and he’s being given plenty of help from his family and hearing specialists.

“He is the biggest chatterbox out there,” Michelle Lever said. “He’s only two so there’s a lot is gibberish that you can’t understand, but when he’s telling you something, he makes sure you understand.

“He absolutely loves songs, it’s the most beautiful thing to watch. ‘In the car when we put on music, he’ll try to sing and wave his arms around like he’s dancing. He absolutely loves to dance with my girls, it’s wonderful.”

Born with moderately severe sensorineural hearing impairment in both ears, he was diagnosed at four-weeks, which his family is grateful for. True, Mom said she “was completely shattered and cried for 12 hours straight” at the time, but that’s changed thanks to that early diagnoses, the hearing aid, specialists and, of course, Mom herself.

“I will make sure he can reach his full potential,” she said. “I’m willing to travel to the moon and back for him. I will do anything it takes to help him.”

Some good news for a change, this one is.
