Digital innovations for transforming healthcare

Healthcare is undergoing a digital transformation that sees a range of new technologies being introduced. These range from big data and machine learning, which are being used to examine medical scans and imaging; to growth with telemedicine and home health solutions. Another area of digital health growth is with robotics in surgical.

The National Health Service in the U.K., for instance, has implemented digital therapies which have succeeded in reducing the need for acute care in diabetes, asthma, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation.

The new report is called “Digital Innovations Transforming Healthcare”, and it looks at life sciences trends across digital innovations, such as digital genomics and artificial intelligence driven medicine. The report comes from Genetic Technology TechVision Opportunity Engine.

This extends to the key digital innovations in healthcare, such as using digital platforms to reverse type 2 diabetes; technologies set to improve chronic respiratory disease with digital medicines and artificial intelligence healthcare platforms to assist with the making of clinical decisions.

The report looks at current research and development advances in the emergent field of genetic technology. Topics covered include technology transfer, joint ventures, and acquisitions. The range of genetic technology applications reviewed include omics technologies. The word ‘omics’ refers to a field of study in biology ending in -omics, such as genomics, proteomics or metabolomics. Most widely discussed is genomics, which is the study of the genomes of organisms.

The omics areas surveyed are genetic, cellular and alternative therapies; sequencing technologies; and genetically altered animals and plants.

The report also contains a ‘Health & Wellness’ area that surveys developments in a range of applications, like genetic engineering, regenerative medicine, drug discovery and development, nanomedicine, nutrition, cosmetic procedures, pain and disease management and therapies, drug delivery, personalized medicine, and smart healthcare.

In terms of drivers for digital health innovation, these are broken down into four core areas, which are: improving health outcomes; seeking administrative efficiency; cost-effectiveness; and improving the user (patient) experience.
