Two deaths, elevated lead cases linked to Life Rising supplement

Chicago, Illinois-based Ton Shen Health is under investigation by the FDA, Cook County Department of Health and the City of Chicago over six adverse events associated with Life Rising dietary supplements from Ton Shen Health/Life Rising.

Three of the adverse event reports involved children who had taken the dietary supplement, two of them with elevated lead levels. The FDA is also investigating two deaths that may be linked to the dietary supplement.

DHZC-2 tablets first recall
According to the FDA notice dated August 11, 2016, Ton Shen Health was recalling one lot of their DHZC-2 tablets because of a potential for excessive lead. Consumers were asked to return the products. At that time, a limited product recall was initiated.

The Cook County Department of Health notified the FDA in April of the possible lead poisoning of a child who had consumed the DHZC-s tablets. After conducting product testing, the FDA alerted the company and the limited recall was initiated. The recalled product comes in a 1.6 ounce, white plastic bottle marked with lot # 2163-844 on the bottom. UPC: 616042102727.

DHZC-2 tablets nationwide recall
Subsequently, the FDA learned of another child sick with elevated lead levels and two deaths of people who were taking the dietary supplement. After talking with the company’s owners, an expanded recall on August 25 was initiated, according to the Chicago Tribune.

On August 25, Ton Shen Health/Life Rising agreed to recall all lots of the DHZC-2 tablets that are sold in retail stores and online nationwide. They also agreed to stop selling all other Life Rising dietary supplement products while the FDA conducts testing to see if other products are also contaminated with lead.

Danger reaches back three years
According to Food Safety News, retailers are being asked to contact all customers who have purchased the Life Rising HHZC-2 tablets during the past three years to warn them of the recall.

“Retailers are encouraged to discontinue the sale of other Life Rising products from Ton Shen Health/Life Rising while the investigation is ongoing,” the FDA warning states.

“Lead poisoning can occur when a person is exposed to high levels of lead over a short period of time,” said Illinois Health Director Dr. Nirav D. Shah in a public warning.

“We urge people not buy the recalled supplement if they see it in stores, and for people who have purchased this product, to return it for a refund. The health effects of lead poisoning can be serious, and in some cases deadly.”

This warning should not be taken lightly
Consumers and health care professionals are encouraged to report any adverse events potentially related to the use of any Ton Shen Health/Life Rising brand products to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program.

To file a report, use the MedWatch Online Voluntary Reporting Form. The completed form can be submitted online or via fax to 800-FDA-0178.
