Quaker Oats recall: Granola bars over Listeria in Canada and U.S.

In a press release, Quaker Oats Company said the recall was initiated after an ingredient supplier was found to have distributed sunflower kernels that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The company said there have been no reported illnesses to date. However, Quaker is initiating the voluntary recall in an abundance of caution to protect public health.

Quaker Oats also says the vast majority of the recalled products were withheld from ever reaching store shelves, so the products under recall are a small quantity. The two products being recalled were distributed in the United States and can be identified as follows:

1. – 6.1 ounce boxes of Quaker Quinoa Granola Bars Chocolate Nut Medley with UPC number 30000 32241 and Best Before Dates of: 10/16/2016, 10/17/2016
2. – 6.1 ounce boxes of Quaker Quinoa Granola Bars Yogurt, Fruit & Nut with UPC number 30000 32243 and Best Before Dates of: 10/10/2016, 10/11/2016

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), The two Quaker Harvest brand products distributed in Ontario, Canada can be identified as follows:

1. – 175 g (5 bars) Quinoa Granola Bars Chocolate Nut Medley with UPC number 0 55577 11021 8 and Best Before Date of October 16, 2016.
2. – 175 g (5 bars) Quinoa Granola Bars Yogurt, Fruit & Nut with UPC number 0 55577 11020 1 and Best Before Date of October 12, 2016.

These products should have been pulled from store shelves, and if you have these products in your home, they should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased. Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend Karen Graham, who served as Editor-at-Large at Digital Journal. She was 78 years old. Karen's view of what is happening in our world was colored by her love of history and how the past influences events taking place today. Her belief in humankind's part in the care of the planet and our environment has led her to focus on the need for action in dealing with climate change. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
