Pizza Hut has added a new Stuffed Crust Pizza to their New Zealand menu. The local breakfast spread, Marmite, is combined with mozzarella to offer customers "a uniquely Kiwi taste."
The new limited-time Chee-Zee Marmite Stuffed Crust Pizza combines the standard pipping of mozzarella cheese with a layer of Marmite, on a Cheese Extreme pizza which has three times the normal amount of mozzarella.
Marmite is a salty yeast spread which is widely popular throughout New Zealand. It is similar to the UK Marmite, and also the spread in Australia known as Vegemite. Most often eaten on toast, it has a strong odor and is an acquired taste.
The Kiwi brand Marmite hit headlines after the devastating Christchurch earthquake in February 2011. The earthquake halted production of the much loved spread for a little over a year causing widespread shortages which was known as 'Marmegedeon'.
The newly launched pizza which appears to be the result of an informal Facebook competition has already got its own hash tag #CheeZeeMite
The NZ$8 pizza is reportedly inspired by the locally popular Cheese and Marmite sandwich. Describing the reaction to the new recipe the general manager of Pizza Hut, Surbi Bahl, states that: "(local customers) aren’t afraid to mix it up when it comes to their pizza. It’s a little nostalgic and it’s a bit of fun. Marmite is one of New Zealand’s best-loved brands and we’re proud to be delivering a pizza - pun intended - that’s uniquely Kiwi and tastes awesome.”
