McDonald’s debuted its new, limited-time burger concoction this week at select locations in China. Dubbed the “Modern China Burger,” the gray fluffy bun, that some say represents a cloud of pollution, with two fried pork patties and a thousand island-like sauce resplendent with peppercorns and black sesame, may be a bit too much, according to Fox News.
China’s McDonald’s culinary chemists aren’t short on ideas, that’s for sure. A few years back, they came out with what they called, the “Bacon Mashed Potato Double Beef Burger,” which people say was as gross as it sounds. For some reason, though, McDonald’s got stuck on the color gray, because a few months ago, they came out with gray ice cream.
While the ice cream looked weird enough, it still tasted good. This was all the incentive they needed to forge ahead with the gray burger. The self-proclaimed “food critics” at TimeOutBeijing decided to try the new cuisine, and decided right from the get-go the “Modern China Burger” was either an attempt to fuse the culinary and cultural values of East and West, or a somewhat offensive attempt to get a new class of customers.
In the McDonald’s ad, the burger appears to be a dark gray, with black specks embedded in the bun, sort of like a smoothly-carved round piece of granite with food in the middle. On Twitter and Instagram, most folks describe it more as a pale, bleached-out looking bun. So far, there have been none of the side-effects, such as green poop, that plagued Burger King customers.
GrubStreet describes the burger this way: “Besides using the one color typically associated with boredom, the bun also looks alarmingly like two slabs of stone.” However one describes the burger, in all fairness, the guys at TimeOutBeijing said the sandwich didn’t taste that bad, but they probably closed their eyes while eating. The Modern China Burger will be available until November 3.
