The ThinkGeek staff are promoting a candy made with components of the incredibly hot ghost pepper. Fans are coughing their approval from charred mouths and throats.
If you have ever wanted a candy that will really set your mouth on fire you now have one from ThinkGeek. These chewy "Ghost Pepper Super Hot Candy Balls" have an incredible amount of spice mixed in with a bit of sugar. For $9.99 you get a small but very potent bag.
Ghost Peppers orBhut Jolokia as some know them, are ridiculously hot and popular in cuisine throughout all of North and South America and parts of the world. They are used to give an insane kick to any dish. Some have described their taste as so hot that they are "painful". To some the flavor literally tastes like pain.
Starting at 333,000 on the Scoville Scale even the mildest varieties are quite hot. The hottest confirmed variety reaches a sweltering 1,532,310 on the scale. That's around one step less spicy than pepper spray police use. The ones used in the candy are supposed to clock in at around 1.4-1.5 million Scoville Heat Units (SHU).
Another good thing about the candy is that the ghost pepper components are quite healthy for you. Capsaicin in the food alone has many well-documented benefits. Just be sure not to get any of the candy in your eyes or on a sensitive part of your body.
