According to the FDA notice issued on April 5, 2016, the company initiated a voluntary recall pf multiple products containing fresh red apple slices because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
At this point in time, the voluntary recall is limited to H-E-B stores in Texas. The recall involves 14 products containing sliced red apples, all sold in H-E-B stores. No illnesses have been reported to date, but consumers need to know that with this particular type of bacteria, symptoms can take up to 70 days to appear, according to the Food Poisoning Bulletin.
The product list is long, and can be viewed on the FDA website, along with pictures of the recalled products. UPC numbers, the best by dates, and various types of packaging. The recalled products include H-E-B Ready Fresh Go Sliced Red Apples, the same product with caramel dip, Value Pack Sliced Apples, Fruit Party Tray, Deluxe Fruit Tray, H-E-B Ready Fresh Go Fresh Fruit Medley, Fruit & Veg Combo Tray, H-E-B Ready Fresh Go Carrots, Apples with Yogurt Pretzels and Ranch Dip, and several others.
The recall was the result of internal company testing that indicated Listeria monocytogenes was present on two random samples of the same product. The company voluntarily ceased production and distribution of the product as the FDA and the company continue to investigate the source of the bacterial contamination.
