article imageCoffee Q and A on the Keurig 2.0 and future Hot/Cold Keurigs Special

By Walter McDaniel     Jun 27, 2014 in Food
We contacted one of the minds behind the Keurig 2.0, Dave Manly, Senior Vice President, Core Systems Innovation at Keurig Green Mountain. He worked with others at the company to create a new, robust form of coffee maker with specialized brewing settings.
Keurig started out with their 1.0 model that proved quite popular for the large variety of brand name flavors such as Starbucks and Folgers. Their new model brings the same names but with options for larger brews and specific temperatures.
Walter McDaniel: Why did you decide to go with a bigger brewing size for the Keurig 2.0?
Dave Manly: Both current Keurig® brewer owners and non-owners have told us they want the ability to consistently and easily brew both a single serving and a carafe of coffee from one system. Our next generation Keurig® brewers will do just that in a sleek, easy-to-use, no mess system.
The core consumer benefits behind the Keurig® 2.0 system include simplicity, quality and choice. By applying those benefits from single serve to batch brewing in the home, we believe Keurig can meet the growing needs of our consumers.
Walter: (It was reported on Mashable that the system could learn your preferences. Dave clarified that for me.)How does the 2.0 learn your preferences over time?
Dave: To clarify, the Keurig® 2.0 system is not equipped to learn personal preferences. Instead, consumers can specify the size, strength and number of cups they want, and program a "favorite" from these preferences. The Keurig® 2.0 brewing system will store these preferences for future use.
In addition, Keurig 2.0 Brewing Technology™ enables the brewer to recognize the inserted Keurig® pack and optimize to the recommended, customized setting for that particular beverage.
Walter: Why did you decide to expand with the K-Carafe setup?
Dave: Both current Keurig® brewer owners and non-owners told us the brewer functionality they wanted most was the ability to brew both a single serving and a carafe from one system with Keurig speed, convenience and brand choice. Our next generation Keurig® 2.0 brewers will do just that, and so much more.
K-Carafe™ packs are new packs developed specifically for use in the Keurig® 2.0 system. These packs contain up to 26 grams of fresh coffee and brew approximately four cups of coffee into a specially designed carafe that holds up to 30 ounces of coffee.
Walter: How do you get your partnerships with big names like Starbucks and Lipton?
Dave: We’ve always made partnership a priority, and the brands that partner with us know that we’ll work hand in hand to develop a beverage that is perfectly consistent with their other formats. These partnerships are mutually beneficial as they allow us to bring the brands consumers know and love into their homes while simultaneously making it possible for said partners to have a place in the home where they may not have previously.
Walter: Do you have any future partnerships planned with major brand names?
Dave: As we stated on our Q2’14 financial conference call, we’ve had very good success adding additional brands as new Keurig partners, including retail customers’ brands, grocery customers’ brands, as well as other named brands. Recently announced partners include Peet’s Coffee & Tea, Target Corporation (Archer Farms® and Market Pantry®) and BJ’s Wholesale Club (Wellsley Farms®), and we’ll continue to announce new partners as they’re signed on.
Walter: Tell us a bit about future projects like the Rivo.
Dave: In addition to Keurig 2.0, we are looking forward to introducing the Keurig Cold™ system. Keurig Cold™ is an in-home cold beverage system that will use single-serve pods to dispense freshly-made cold beverages, including carbonated drinks, enhanced waters, juice drinks, sports drinks and teas with the one-touch simplicity, quality and variety that consumers love about the Keurig® hot system platform. We look forward to sharing more information as we get closer to launch.
The Keurig® Rivo® Cappuccino & Latte System will continue to expand in availability and is widely enjoyed by espresso-based beverage aficionados.
Walter: Do you have anything to say to our Digital Journal readers?
Dave: We’re excited to introduce the most advanced hot beverage system ever made by Keurig Green Mountain. Keurig® 2.0 integrates the best technologies of both our Keurig® K-Cup® and Keurig® Vue® brewing systems to deliver everything consumers know and love about Keurig – and more – with game-changing performance and function, unprecedented beverage choice, and timeless design appeal.
We want to thank Dave Manly for taking time from his work with the Core Systems Innovation branch of Keurig Green Mountain to talk with us. Look out for the launch of the Keurig 2.0 which launches this fall. For those who want a slightly more luxurious cup there is the previously mentioned Rivo system. Their new cold system is slated for a 2015 launch and is currently in planning.
