The recalled products include 18 different varieties of cheese under the Isle of Kintyre brand name, and six more cheese varieties under the Inverloch Cheese Co. label. These products, imported from Scotland, are being recalled by Toronto-based Glen Echo Fine Foods.
In its Nov. 26, CFIA recall update, consumers are warned to not eat the products and distributors, retailers and food service establishments are warned to not sell or use any of the products. Consumers are also warned that the recalled products may have been sold in smaller packages, cut and wrapped by some retailers. If anyone is unsure of the product they have purchased in this manner, they are advised to contact their retailer.
CTV News is reporting the cheeses under the recall notice are sold in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador and possibly other provinces and territories. The CFIA says anyone who bought the products should throw them out or return them to their retailer for a refund.
Consumers are reminded that food products contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell like they are spoiled, but they can still make you sick. Symptoms of this food-borne illness can include vomiting, nausea, a persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness.
Listeria is a serious illness and is most worrisome when the bacterial illness is contracted by pregnant women, newborns, and adults with weakened immune systems. It is important to know that infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth. In severe cases of illness, people may die.
